Chemistry is the central discipline of modern science. It connects with physics and mathematics, Earth and environmental sciences, and also biology and medicine. Your studies will deal with the application of chemistry in varied fields - from medicinal drugs to alternative fuels.
Your studies will range from the structure of a basic atom (symmetry, structure and reactivity) and the derivation of chemical equations to calculating chemical reactions and reporting the results of research. Depending on what you specialise in, you will be prepared for a wide variety of job fields such as atomic and molecular manipulation, drug development, or environment and forensic science.
You will undergo theoretical and practical training, and taught how to be analytical, imaginative and creative in solving problems.
Chemical aspects of biological processes; chemical kinetics and molecular reaction dynamics; general and inorganic chemistry; organic and biological chemistry; physical chemistry (and laboratory); statistical thermodynamics; synthetic polymer chemistry; quantitative chemistry; quantum and statistical mechanics.
The normal duration for this course is three years.
A prior study of chemistry to pre-u level is required and some institutions will also require mathematics.
You can work at academic institutions, research and development firms, laboratories, manufacturing, or health and medical establishments. Postgraduate study will be required for research or teaching positions.
